Project Information

The Borough of Sandwell Public Health commissioned Creative Health CIC to deliver an asset based creative consultation project exploring the topic of wellbeing. The brief requested that we target some of the more vulnerable Sandwell Communities and add a qualitative dimension to Sandwell Public Health work. Through the project artists Heather Wastie, Jamila Thomas (née Walker), Justin Wiggan, and Karina Thompson engaged with the participants in the groups to explore thoughts and stories about wellbeing, and through the process of creative activity, identifying the assets that contribute positively to their sense of wellbeing.

Bostin Chats in Sandwell aimed to engage and mobilise communities through a participatory process called ‘asset-mapping’. The project supported individuals in identifying which personal and community assets currently serve them and their communities in maintaining a positive sense of wellbeing. Through the project, artists engaged participants in the groups to explore thoughts and stories about wellbeing, and through the process of creative activity, identifying the assets that contribute positively to their sense of wellbeing. Information gathered from the workshops was then captured visually through the production of a poster illustrating those assets – an asset map. The asset map will be used by Sandwell Public Health to inform service delivery.

This report outlines the methodological approach and follows the process, findings and outcomes of the Bostin Chats in Sandwell project.

Justin Wiggan, one of the artists commissioned, engaged two groups: Newcomers who may not be proficient in the English Language at Brushstrokes in Smethwick (see below for Brushstrokes sound piece) and participants who had early onset to more moderate dementia at the BUDs Club in Rowley Regis (see below for BUDs sound piece). Justin created a safe and comfortable environment with sound in which participants shared their stories and memories and produced soundworks following the process.
