Project Information

This Way Up at Shire Hall Gallery in Staffordshire worked with The Social Hub, an existing wellbeing group. The project provided an opportunity for participants to take part in a regular artistic activity with other people, led and supported by a professional artist, and inspired by gallery collections. The aim of This Way Up is to contribute towards an improved sense of wellbeing by providing a creative outlet, a break from everyday life, a safe social space and an opportunity to pursue individual creative interests.

The Social Hub worked with artist Louise Blakeway. Louise worked with participants to explore different ways to approach drawing, building skills and confidence week by week. Participants were keen to improve their drawing skills and were introduced to different techniques, and tried a range of exercises and ways to get started and develop, using a wide range of subject matter. Participants also worked with found materials and different papers to produce their own individual drawing surfaces.

This Way Up provided a friendly, safe and relaxing space for participants, with an experienced, skilled and supportive artist. Participants were able to develop their creative interests and style, meet with other people regularly and share their work and ideas.

Learning new techniques in art and drawing.

Refreshing my skills.

These sessions have been for me inspiring, I can’t explain the ease I have felt and the joy I feel whilst at the sessions.

Something positive to focus on. Louise has been a lovely, relaxing and calming person to be around.

I loved this session today and I liked the fact that Louise has lots of different papers etc.

Being in a group of lovely people.

I really enjoyed the drawing exercises and working with colours inspired me to take up drawing again.

It’s been good getting back into drawing and learning new skills.

I enjoyed going back to basics and learning to draw again.
