Project Information

East Staffs Borough Council and South Staffs PCT deliver this project in partnership. Individuals are referred by the Falls Prevention Team to participate in the dance group for 12 weeks as therapy to develop strength, balance, coordination, stretch, confidence and relaxation. Following this period participants have the option of continuing with the creative movement group.

The group use scarves, feathers, umbrellas, bowler hats and canes as props to assist them in their dancing together. They learn set dances as well as improvisation and group dances.

A physiotherapist and an occupational therapist attend and support the sessions and develop the link between the health service and project. An integral element of the project is socialising. This is evidenced in the session through all the laughter and chatter which continues after the session where all involved move into the café area for tea and cake.

Approximately 20 adults over 65 who have had or are at risk of having a fall and have been referred by the Specialist Practitioner for Older People from Burton Falls Prevention Team.
