Project Information

In 2011 local artist Emily Campbell was commissioned to make artworks for the new City General Children’s Wards. Emily spent a period of time talking to staff at the current site and finding out what the particular needs were in each space. Interacting with patients and their parents, Emily created small digital images to inform the final works.

Emily generated photographic images of the local area, creating fantastical digital montages. The images though familiar contain surreal elements that aim to create something extraordinary out of the everyday. Whilst is some areas, the images serve to calm patients with magnificent views and soothing skies, in others the images incorporate games for the staff to use as a method of distraction for distressed children.

The images fill the wall spaces in the corridors and entrances to the wards and are linked with bubbles that reflect some of the main images and serve as way finding.
